It Just Takes One

It Just Takes One

One play changes everything.

When I look back on my hockey career, I can point to a few moments where it seemed like one play changed everything.

One shift.

One hit.

One goal.

One opportunity that completely changed the trajectory of my career.

I’ll never forget one of mine.

For years, I had been bouncing between the ECHL and the American Hockey League.

I’d get called up for a game.

Maybe two games.

Sometimes I’d be so desperate to make an impact that I’d almost try too hard.

I’d be looking for the big hit.

Trying to force something.

Trying to prove that I belonged.

Then the game would end.

Nothing really happened.

I’d leave frustrated…

And the next day I’d get sent back down.

Then I got another call to join the Providence Bruins of the AHL.

And this time, almost immediately, everything came together.

On one of my first shifts, I absolutely crushed a guy with a hit.

He challenged me to a fight.

We dropped the gloves.

I won the fight.

And just like that…

I had made an impact.

The next day I was back in the lineup.

I played the same way.

Hard.

Rugged.

Physical.

And then I scored a beautiful goal on Manny Legace, a veteran NHL goaltender who was playing in the AHL at the time.

Another impact.

Another game earned.

Then another.

Eventually, I stuck.

I signed a contract for the rest of the season.

I ended up playing four seasons in Providence.

And eventually…

I made the Boston Bruins.

But when I trace that entire journey backward, I can almost draw a straight line back to one play.

That first big hit.

That fight.

That moment where I finally showed exactly what I could bring.

But here’s the important part:

That moment wasn’t luck.

It may have looked like one moment.

But there were thousands of moments that came before it.

Thousands of workouts.

Skates.

Sprints.

Lifts.

Fights.

Practices.

Bus rides.

Extra reps.

Hours when nobody was watching.

All of that preparation eventually collided with an opportunity.

And when it did…

I was ready.

I witnessed the same thing happen to one of my teammates.

At the time, I was trying desperately to add penalty killing to my game.

My agent kept telling me:

“Bobby, you need to kill penalties. Add that to your game and you become that much more valuable.”

He was right.

There was another player on our team who played a very similar style to me.

Third or fourth line right winger.

Hard.

Physical.

Fought.

Checked.

Did the dirty work.

And we were both trying to earn an opportunity on the penalty kill.

We practiced it.

Worked on it.

Waited.

And waited.

Neither one of us was getting much of an opportunity in games.

Then one night, the coach called his number.

I remember watching him jump over the boards and thinking:

Man… I wish that was me.

I’ll admit it.

There was a little jealousy there.

Because I wanted that opportunity badly.

Then something incredible happened.

He read a D-to-D pass perfectly.

Poked the puck free.

Went in alone on a breakaway…

And scored a beautiful shorthanded goal.

Highlight-reel stuff.

I couldn’t believe it.

And almost instantly, something changed.

He became a penalty killer.

That one play proved to the coaching staff that he could do it.

They trusted him again.

Then again.

And penalty killing became part of his role for the rest of his career.

I never really got that same opportunity at the highest levels in the AHL and NHL.

That’s hockey.

Sometimes the window opens for half a second.

And you better be ready to climb through it.

I’ve seen it too many times to ignore it:

One play can change your career.

One shift can change the way a coach sees you.

One blocked shot.

One backcheck.

One goal.

One hit.

One pass.

One battle along the wall.

One moment where you show:

I can do this.

But you can't control when that moment arrives.

You can only control whether you're ready for it.

And that's why the little things matter so much.

Day after day.

Practice after practice.

Rep after rep.

You keep doing the right things.

You keep building.

You keep preparing.

And eventually?

Lightning strikes.

The opportunity comes.

And you cash in.

So as this season gets underway, keep going.

Be the hardest worker on the ice.

Take the extra rep.

Develop another element of your game.

Don't get discouraged if your opportunity hasn't come yet.

Your job is to make sure that when it does…

you're ready.

P.S. You never know which touch of the puck is going to be the one that matters.

That’s why the work you do before the moment arrives is so important.

Wraparound builds off-ice training tools that help you stack the reps you can’t always get during team practice.

Put a Wraparound on your stick, grab a Puckaround, and get to work in the garage, driveway, basement, or wherever you can find a little space.

Ten extra minutes.

Hundreds of touches.

Day after day.

Because someday the puck is going to land on your stick in a moment that matters.

Maybe it’s at tryouts.

Maybe it’s late in a game.

Maybe a coach is watching.

Maybe it's the play that changes everything.

You don't get to choose when that moment comes.

But you can choose whether you're prepared for it.
