If you haven’t heard yet, we’ve teamed up with Bobby Robins — former NHL player, Division 1 captain, and now the voice behind our weekly mindset column: A Savage Shift.
Bobby brings a lifetime of grit, experience, and wisdom from the trenches of the hockey world. And what he’s sharing each week isn’t just theory — it’s forged from blood, sweat, and a dream that wouldn’t quit.
We recently had Bobby on the Our Kids Play Hockey podcast, and there was one story he shared that hit us like a ton of bricks.
He was playing junior hockey in the USHL for the Tri-City Storm. One night during a home game against the Omaha Lancers, his billet dad struck up a conversation with a scout in the stands. After some small talk (and probably pumping Bobby’s tires), the billet dad asked:
“How many of these kids do you think will make it to the NHL?”
The scout didn’t hesitate.
“One… maybe two.”
That was it. Out of all the players on the ice that night — all the talent, the work ethic, the hope — just one or two would ever see the show.
When Bobby heard about that conversation, he could’ve folded. He could’ve let doubt creep in. But he didn’t.
He made a decision:
“That’s going to be me.”
Years later — long after his pro career — he looked back at the rosters from that night. He ran the numbers. And guess what?
Only two players from those teams made the NHL.
One from Omaha.
And one from Tri-City.
Bobby was the one.
Let that sink in.
This week’s mindset challenge is simple:
There’s always going to be noise. Always going to be stats, odds, and doubts.
But belief?
Belief is the edge most players never develop.
Belief doesn’t guarantee success — but without it, you never even give yourself a shot.
This week:
🔥 Shut down the negative self-talk.
🔥 Replace it with focused belief.
🔥 Visualize yourself on the path.
🔥 Get back to work.
Most players won’t make it.
But what if you’re the one?
We believe in the power of belief.
We believe in you.
