A Question We All Have to Ask Ourselves
Do you ever catch yourself asking…
What if?
Everyone has a what if.
What if I would have actually gone for it?
What if I didn’t play it safe?
What if I gave it everything I had?
For some people, that question stays stuck in the past.
For me, it almost did.
After four years of college hockey at UMass Lowell, I signed an NHL contract with the Ottawa Senators. I trained hard that summer. But I also partied hard. I thought signing the deal meant I had made it.
Here’s the truth most people don’t know.
An NHL team might sign 50 contracts. Only about half of those guys actually make the team.
When I showed up to training camp, I was not in the shape I needed to be. Too many late nights. Too many distractions. Too much chasing the wrong things.
I did not make the team.
I spent my rookie year in the AHL. Then I ended up in the ECHL. Then I went overseas.
On the outside, life looked fine.
On the inside, I was asking one question.
What if?
What if I had trained like a real pro?
What if I had taken it seriously?
What if I had faced my fear instead of avoiding it?
I carried regret. Real regret.
Then one day I realized something.
What if does not have to live in the past.
What if can become a decision.
What if I came back to North America and truly went for it?
What if I quit the distractions?
What if I faced my biggest fear, fighting, and embraced it instead of running from it?
Something shifted inside me. A true Savage Shift.
The question turned into a statement.
I’m going to find out.
I got in the best shape of my life.
I stopped partying.
I trained relentlessly.
I learned how to fight and faced that fear head on.
Four years later, I played in the NHL with the Boston Bruins.
That is my What if story.
Now here’s my question for you.
What is yours?
If that question is sitting in your heart, you have to go for it. I’m telling you from the other side of it. You have to find out. Living with regret is heavier than the grind.
When I watch the Winter Olympics, I think of the greatest What if story in hockey history.
