The games that never leave you.
What’s the biggest game you ever played in?
I’ve been in some big ones.
And I still see them clearly.
The Wisconsin state tournament when I was a squirt. Third place game. Triple overtime. Breakaway goal. I can still feel the puck on my blade. That trophy still sits at the rink in Marinette, up in the northwoods.
Winning the America West Junior A Championship in 2001 against the Billings Bulls. First year chasing the dream. We won it all. I remember thinking, this is how it’s going to be every year.
It wasn’t.
It ended up being the only championship I ever won.
Junior year at UMass Lowell. Ranked ninth in the country. Home-and-home against Boston College. They had 6’7” Brian Boyle. I wanted that matchup. Two big bodies, two physical players. We beat the number one team in the country Friday and Saturday night.
We walked through the cobblestone streets of Lowell carrying a random clam chowder trophy we "borrowed" from the Dubliner Pub, like we owned the world.
For a weekend, we did.
NHL exhibition games were massive. Trying to make the team. Trying to prove you belong. Willing to do anything to keep the dream alive.
Then 500 games in the minors. Every single one mattered. Every single one shaped me.
And when I finally played my first official NHL game, it was special. No question.
But here’s the truth.
It didn’t feel all that different from some random game in Great Falls, Montana during my first year of junior hockey.
Because when you’re all in, every game is a big game.
And we just watched one of the biggest of them all.
USA taking home Olympic gold.
Some of us will never forget where we were when that final horn sounded.
Now imagine what those players felt.
They’ll carry that forever.
Maybe this is your reminder not to just be a fan of big moments.
Maybe it’s your reminder to chase them.
Or maybe your playing days are done like mine.
And what you have now are the memories. The laughs. The wins. The losses. That look in your teammate’s eyes in the locker room after you both laid it on the line.
To honor the game.
To honor the biggest moments.
